Good Morning! To kick off day 2 of the love-a-thon, I am participating in the X Meets Y challenge. This challenge is made for you to combine the books and movies/tv shows that you love in some way, in order for other people to find new recommendations for things to check out. This challenge is hosted by The Daily Prophecy.
If you like watching SURVIVOR, try reading THE HUNGER GAMES
Both of these are about a competition to outwit, outplay and outlast (as per Survivor’s slogan). While The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a lot more gruesome, Survivor can get pretty intense at times too. Survivor is my FAVOURITE show. I watch every season and get wrapped up in the drama and the competition each year. Lucky for the Survivor contestants, they only get their torch snuffed when they get sent home….the Hunger Games contestants don’t get to go home at all!
If you like watching the HARRY POTTER SERIES, try reading the SEVENWATERS SERIES
For YEARS I searched for a book series that I would love as much as the Harry Potter series, and failed over and over again. Then one day I stumbled upon the Sevenwaters series and everything turned around for me. I have this series to thank for my headfirst plunge back into my old non-stop reading habit. While the stories are not super similar, the writing is similar (both JK Rowling and Juliet Marillier have a beautiful way of creating character driven stories set to beautiful scenery) and both have MAGIC! Like HP, Sevenwaters is set in a “normal” world that happens to have some people who are magical, though HP does focus a bit more on the magic part. Sevenwaters also has some great romance, so is definitely more for ADULT lovers of Harry Potter!
If you like watching ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, try reading HEARTLESS
Both of these stories are based around Alice in Wonderland, and both are wonderfully bizarre. Alice Through the Looking Glasses focuses more on the Mad Hatter, while Heartless by Marissa Meyer tells the story of The Queen of Hearts before she became a villain. I love the wacky characters and non-sensical events that happen in both of these tales. I also love Johnny Depp, so it was pretttttty easy for me to love Alice Through the Looking Glass!
If you like watching THE LION KING, try reading ZAMBA
If you love the african animals in the Lion King, you can’t go wrong with Zamba, The True Story of The Greatest Lion That Ever Lived by Ralph Helfer. Zamba is the story of a lion that was raised with compassion instead of cruelty, which was rare in the 1950s. We also get to meet lots of other animals in the story, and just like in the Lion King, there comes a times where there is a life or death situation, and it was interesting to read about how trained animals react compared to how wild animals would!
If you like watching TANGLED, try reading TOWER OF THORNS
Both of these stories are about someone locked away in a tower! What makes this an interesting match is that in one story the woman is trapped in the tower, whereas in the other story the woman is the one trying to rescue the tower resident! Tower of Thorns is the second book in Blackthorn and Grim series by Juliet Marillier, and book one has nothing to do with love struck girls with long hair like book two is, however, book one (Dreamer’s Pool) is well worth the read and a 5 star story in my opinion!
If you like watching SURVIVORMAN, try reading WILD
SurvivorMan and Wild both touch on how to survive outdoors. SurvivorMan is a bit more intense, given that Les Stroud is sometimes alone in the wild for weeks having to hunt and fish and fend for himself, but the survival situation in Wild does get pretty serious at some points. While Wild by Cheryl Strayed wasn’t one of my favourite stories, I did really appreciate the hiking journey that she took (I just didn’t like a lot of her backstory) and for any outdoor enthusiasts, there’s a good chance you’ll find this book enjoyable!
What a blast this has been! I hope everyone is having fun with the Love-A-Thon!
Cheers, Jen from Habitat for Happiness
